Sam and Alvin met at Johns Hopkins over ten years ago. Alvin was the roommate of Sam’s best friend in college, and through the transitive property, they became best friends. Alvin had transferred from USF to Johns Hopkins and was passionate about education and game theory. During school, Alvin was Sam’s sister's very first intern for an edtech platform and one of the first people outside Sam's family to meet his newborn niece.

We stayed in touch over the years. He went back to Taiwan where he served in the military and worked in education, sales, and marketing. I stayed in DC, moved to NYC then LA to pursue music & an early-stage startup. We were always sending each other songs or memes, but lost touch for a bit.
After Alvin finished his master's program in computational linguistics at CU Boulder, he moved to the Bay Area. The two reconnected, and Alvin came to Sam’s music show in San Francisco. Nothing had changed. They were back to daily phone calls about life and recent studies in NLP and AI.
Eventually, they collaborated on consulting work for some local startups. They had weekly syncs with Sam's sister, who became their first official mentor. They road-tripped to CES together, and during a recap of the event to their mentor, they realized they had uncovered a huge problem they knew they could solve together: making AI tools more intuitive for non-native English speakers, starting with the immigration process.
